Burkina Faso Edge Equatorial Guinea in Dramatic AFCON 2025 Finish
A tactical battle, a red card and stoppage-time chaos shaped a Group E clash that refused to settle quietly.
Control without the breakthrough
From the opening whistle, Burkina Faso looked to dictate tempo and territory. Les Étalons pushed their lines high, aiming to exploit space behind the back line and accelerate play after regaining possession.

Equatorial Guinea, however, stayed disciplined and compact. The Nzalang Nacional sat deep in a clear 4-1-4-1, closing central lanes and forcing Burkina Faso wide. The opening stretch produced little goalmouth action.
First warning amid a physical contest
Burkina Faso enjoyed more of the ball and moved it well in advanced areas, but a lack of precision in the final pass kept chances to a minimum.
The first real opportunity arrived at 30’. After a strong challenge that the referee allowed to play on, José Machín unleashed a powerful long-range effort that skimmed past the post. The midfielder was later shown a yellow card as the intensity continued to rise.
A red card reshapes the match
Early in the second half, the game shifted decisively. At 50’, Basilio Ndong was sent off for a heavy challenge, leaving Equatorial Guinea down to ten men.
With the numerical advantage, Burkina Faso pressed higher and sought width, but their deliveries from wide areas lacked bite. The tempo remained high, yet clear shots on target were still scarce.
VAR intervention and a stunning twist
At 70’, Burkina Faso thought they had broken through. A right-sided cross found Ouattara, who nodded the ball across for Lassina Traoré to finish. VAR, however, ruled Traoré offside, overturning the goal and sparking celebrations on the Equatorial Guinea bench.
Against the run of play, Equatorial Guinea struck at 85’. From a left-sided corner taken by Carlos Akapo, Marvin Anieboh rose above the defense to head home, giving the ten-man side a shock lead.
Chaos in added time
The finale was breathless. At 95’, a long ball caused havoc in the box. Ouattara appeared to be fouled, but before the whistle could sound, Minoungou reacted first to bundle the ball into the net and level the score.
With Equatorial Guinea visibly exhausted, Burkina Faso pushed once more. At 98’, Irie reached the byline and delivered a precise cross. After a save from the goalkeeper, Tapsoba reacted quickest to head in the rebound and complete the comeback.
A result that reshapes Group E
Burkina Faso walked away with a statement victory built on persistence and late conviction in Group E of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025. For Equatorial Guinea, it was a cruel ending to a courageous performance that slipped away in the final moments.
