It was total drama in the Quarterfinal game between Mali and Ivory Coast in AFCON 2023. Despite having a player less (nine in the end), The Lions secured the win in extra time.

The first half was filled with controversy as Mali was denied a penalty, with a clear handball in the box. However, after VAR consultation, the referee decided not to award the penalty. Minutes later, a penalty was given to Mali, but Adama Traore missed it in the 17th minute.

In the second half, Dorgless Nene put Mali ahead, only for Ivory Coast to dramatically equalize in the 90th minute thanks to Simon Adingra. In the last minute of extra time, Oumar Diakité became the hero, scoring the goal that secured his country’s place in the Semifinals.
