How Nigeria Enters the Match
Nigeria begins its road to the 2027 AFCON under head coach Eric Chelle, although the team will have to play its opening match without one of its biggest stars.
According to official information from CAF, Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau due to a muscle injury.
The striker was originally included in Chelle's squad despite suffering the injury while playing for Galatasaray against Başakşehir in the Turkish league. Osimhen was forced off in the 33rd minute, with subsequent medical examinations confirming a muscle injury and pain in his right thigh.
His absence represents a significant blow for the Super Eagles. Osimhen has scored 35 goals for the Nigerian national team since making his international debut in 2017.
After facing Madagascar, Nigeria will continue its qualifying campaign against Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
How Madagascar Enters the Match
Madagascar begins the qualifiers with an opportunity to make an early statement against one of the strongest national teams in its group.
The Malagasy side will look to take advantage of Osimhen's absence and pick up points at the start of a qualifying campaign in which it shares the group with Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania.
The battle will be particularly important because Tanzania has already secured its place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the tournament's three host nations alongside Kenya and Uganda.
A Key Match to Open the Qualifiers
With Tanzania already automatically qualified, Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will compete for the additional qualification spot available from Group L.
That makes a strong start crucial for both teams in a six-match qualifying campaign that will determine who joins Tanzania at the next Africa Cup of Nations.
