Olympic Medalist Convicted of This Crime
Australian authorities confirmed on Tuesday the charges of dangerous driving against Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis for the fatal hit-and-run of his wife, fellow Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins, on December 30, 2023.
Prosecutor Talia Costi confirmed during a hearing to determine the charges before the Magistrates Court in the southern city of Adelaide that police accused Dennis of dangerous driving for driving without due care, according to the Australian news agency AAP.
Dennis, who is out on bail and remained silent during the hearing, is scheduled to appear before the court on October 30 to respond to these charges.
A world time trial champion in 2018 and 2019, Dennis was arrested on December 31 in connection with the fatal accident involving his wife, also a cyclist, Melissa Hoskins.
Hoskins, who was part of the Australian track cycling team at the London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, died in a hospital in Adelaide after being hit near her home on December 30, 2023.
Following the death of the 32-year-old athlete, police arrested her husband and filed charges against him, though he was later released on provisional bail while facing this process, in which if found guilty, he could receive a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
Hoskins and Dennis, who participated in major cycling events like the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, were married in 2018 and had two children.
