Dana White Criticizes Canelo Álvarez's Independence Day Fight
UFC President Dana White has shared his thoughts on Canelo Álvarez's decision to fight on Mexican Independence Day, September 14, in Las Vegas. This date coincides with the highly anticipated UFC 306 event at the Sphere, featuring Sean O'Malley versus Merab Dvalishvili and the trilogy fight between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko.
During the post-UFC 304 press conference, White acknowledged that it made sense for Canelo to choose such a significant date for Mexicans. "To be honest, I didn't know what they were going to do," White said. "But it's Mexican Independence Day, so you have to assume there were probably going to be other Mexicans fighting that night, besides ours. Like I said yesterday, it is what it is. Here we go, we'll see how it plays out."
Despite his calm demeanor during the conference, White had previously expressed frustration, suggesting that the date was "snatched" by Canelo's representative, Al Haymon. However, White emphasized his respect for the Mexican boxer and his agency, assuring there are no hard feelings.
"Canelo is one of those guys I respect, and well, good for Haymon," White mentioned. "Haymon snatched the date from me right away."
