Dafne Schippers, Tori Bowie and Elaine Thompson wage battle in a fiercely competitive women's 200 metre final on day 12 at Rio 2016, while Usain Bolt continues his bid for an unprecedented 'triple-triple'.

Women's athletics is set to dominate the headlines on a typically busy day in Brazil, with finals in the 200m, 100m hurdles and long jump all to come.

Bolt has already delighted the locals with a historic third 100m Olympic title and he runs in the men's 200m semis on Wednesday.

Below we take a look at what is to come in Rio.

SCHIPPERS THE WOMAN TO BEAT IN 200M

Thompson became the latest Jamaican sprint sensation to announce herself to the world audience by clinching gold in the 100m earlier this week, but she will have to go some to add the 200m title.

That is because Schippers has been so dominant in the distance over the past 12 months, topping the podium at last year's World Championship and running the quickest time of 2016.

The Dutchwoman was superb in the semi-finals on Tuesday, posting the quickest time of 21.96 seconds, but American Bowie - runner-up in the 100m in Rio - also poses a threat to her challenge.

USAIN TO STEP IT UP IN SEMIS?

The athletics world is running out of superlatives to describe Bolt's achievements in the sport and he coasted through his 200m heat in 20.28secs on Tuesday.

But the quickest time in the heats when to Canada's Andre De Grasse - third in the 100m - and he is tipped by many to take on the mantle of spring king when Bolt calls it a day.

As is so often the case, though, Bolt always saves his best for the big occasions and the legendary Jamaican remains  the hot favourite to complete the second leg of the "triple-triple".

Justin Gatlin ran a 20.42secs in one of the slower qualifying times, but the American remains a contender.

REESE READY FOR MORE OLYMPIC GOLD?

Brittney Reese has been the dominant force in women's long jump since 2009, winning three World Championships gold medals and the Olympic title at London 2012 in that time.

Furthermore, the American recorded a jump of 7.31m at the United States Olympic trials, the farthest distance recorded in the women's long jump since 2004.

She goes into the final as favourite despite recording only the third best jump in qualifying behind Ivana Spanovic and Malaika Mihambo.

BEST OF THE REST

The women's 100m hurdles appears wide open, with defending champions Sally Pearson of Australia absent through injury, while American Dawn Harper and world champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica both endured disappointment in Olympic trials.

Brianna Rollins of USA was the 2013 world champion and is among the favourites, while compatriots Kristi Castlin and Nia Ali are also heavily fancied.

In badminton, there will be a final without heavyweights China. The Chinese completed a clean sweep of gold medals in 2012, but the mixed doubles final will be contested between Malaysia and Indonesia.

And in beach volleyball, hosts Brazil will be represented in the final by Agatha and Barbara, who go up against German pair Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst.
