United States Advances to Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Final
The United States secured their spot in the Paris 2024 Olympic women’s football final after defeating Germany with a goal from Sophia Smith in extra time (95th minute) in the match held in Lyon. The game, which ended 0-0 in regular time, was fiercely contested with strong defenses and few clear scoring opportunities.
Smith, who received a pass through the lines from Mallory Swanson, beat German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger with a precise shot to score the only goal of the match. In the closing moments of extra time, Alyssa Naeher played a crucial role by saving a shot from Laura Freigang, sealing the victory for the United States.
With this win, the U.S. team, which has already claimed four Olympic gold medals in women’s football, will await the winner of the match between Brazil and Spain to compete in the final on August 10 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
Germany will now prepare to compete for the bronze medal on August 9 in Lyon, where they will face the loser of the other semifinal match.
