Prisca Awiti Wins Silver Medal for Mexico at the Olympic Games
Mexican judoka Prisca Awiti Alcaraz secured a silver medal in the women's -63 kg category after losing the final to Slovenian Andreja Leski by ippon (1-10).
It was an impressive and historic journey for the Mexican at the Campo Marte pavilion. Awiti Alcaraz, an “outsider” in the main draw who has been competing internationally for Mexico since 2017, gave no respite to her young opponent, suffocating her with an 11-0 (ippon and waza-ari) in just three minutes and 11 seconds of the match.
Supported by a handful of Mexicans in the stands, the London-born judoka, now 28, achieved a silver medal—a success unprecedented in the history of Mexican Olympic judo.
With her offensive style, she eliminated Afghan refugee team member Nigara Shaheen in an expeditious 35-second bout in the first round, and in the round of 16, she defeated Poland’s Angelika Szymańska (world No. 4). In the quarterfinals, she faced Austrian Lubjana Piovesana, and in the semifinals, she overcame Kristo.
This silver medal marks a significant milestone for Mexican judo, demonstrating Awiti Alcaraz's exceptional talent and determination on the international stage.
