Noah Lyles Competes with COVID and Finishes Third in the Paris 2024 200 Meters: Champion is Letsile Tebogo
The United States Track and Field Federation confirmed that sprinter Noah Lyles, who finished in third place in the 200 meters final, competed while testing positive for COVID-19.
In a statement, the federation reported: “Noah Lyles tested positive for COVID-19. Both the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and USATF immediately activated all necessary protocols to prioritize Lyles' health, the well-being of the team, and the safety of other competitors.”
The statement continued: “Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of the athletes while upholding their right to compete. After a thorough medical evaluation, Noah decided to participate in the race. We respect his decision and will continue to monitor his health.”
USATF added: “As an organization, we strictly adhere to the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control, the USOPC, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to prevent the spread of illness among team members, protecting their health and performance.”
In the 200 meters final, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo emerged as the Olympic champion with a time of 19.46 seconds, setting a new African record. Tebogo, who ran with notable consistency, surpassed Lyles, who finished in third place with a time of 19.70 seconds. American Kenneth Bednarek secured second place with a time of 19.72 seconds.
Lyles, who had won the gold medal in the 100 meters four days earlier, aimed to replicate Usain Bolt’s triple victory. However, the outcome of the 200 meters race thwarted his goal. Dominican Alexander Ogando finished fifth with a time of 20.02 seconds, earning an Olympic diploma.
