France to Face Spain in Quest for Gold
The French national football team overcame a challenging match against Egypt (3-1), which went into extra time, to reach their first Olympic final in 40 years. They are now set to compete for the gold medal against Spain.
Thierry Henry's squad had to work hard for their victory, which came during extra time with an extra player on the field. This win secures them a spot at the Parc des Princes on Friday to face Santi Denia's Spanish team.
Egypt, managed by Brazilian Rogerio Micale, showed great prowess throughout the tournament. Despite being the only team to defeat Spain so far (albeit against a roster of substitutes), they deserved better in the first half, dominating with eight shots on goal.
Egypt even took the lead an hour into the game with a goal from Saber Abdelmohsen and defended well for much of the match. However, France accelerated in the second half, and Mateta's goal in the 83rd minute forced extra time. Egypt played with a disadvantage due to Omar Fayed's expulsion.
This setback was costly, as Mateta scored again in the 99th minute, putting the French ahead and sealing their victory with a third goal from Michael Olise in the 108th minute.
France will now seek their second gold in football, having last won in 1984 by defeating Brazil, with notable players like Guy Lacombe and Dominique Bijotat on the team.
