The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games officially began with a spectacular Opening Ceremony that brought together athletes from 74 nations and territories.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games officially got underway with an Opening Ceremony filled with music, tradition and unforgettable moments at Scotland’s Hydro Arena. For the first time in the history of the Games, the opening celebration was staged inside an indoor arena, creating a more intimate and immersive experience for the thousands in attendance and for millions of viewers around the world.

Scotland Showcased Its Identity in a Ceremony Full of Symbolism
The ceremony began with a humorous touch as legendary cyclist Sir Chris Hoy appeared alongside the iconic Doctor Who, before the arrival of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. From that point on, the stage was transformed into a celebration of Scottish culture featuring musical performances, bagpipes, dancing and references to national symbols such as Loch Ness and the anthem Flower of Scotland.
The traditional Parade of Nations introduced the delegations from all 74 participating nations and territories. Teams such as Gabon and Togo made their Commonwealth Games debuts, while Guyana paid tribute to the victims of a recent ferry disaster by wearing black armbands and carrying its flag at half-mast.
The ceremony also marked the conclusion of the King’s Baton Relay, a tradition that traveled across the Commonwealth before returning to Glasgow with all 74 batons decorated by each participating nation.
Competition Begins With Major Stars and High Expectations
After officially declaring the Games open, King Charles III highlighted the sense of unity represented by the Commonwealth and recognized the effort of every athlete competing in this edition.
The festive atmosphere continued with musical performances from Scottish artists including Tom Walker, KT Tunstall, Callum Beattie and Nina Nesbitt, who brought to a close a night that blended tradition, innovation and entertainment.
Sporting competition begins on Friday with the first finals and the awarding of the opening medals. International stars will look to make history in Glasgow during an edition that promises excitement all the way through to the Closing Ceremony on August 2.
