Canelo Álvarez’s Former Rival Dismisses His Chances Against Terence Crawford
Canelo Álvarez’s former rival, Edgar Berlanga, surprised many by backing Terence Crawford ahead of their September 13 mega fight in Las Vegas.
An Unexpected Endorsement
The upcoming September 13 clash between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Terence Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas has sparked countless predictions. While many see the Mexican as the favorite due to his power and experience, one of his former rivals, Edgar Berlanga, shocked by siding with the American.
Berlanga knows firsthand the danger of Canelo’s punch. Just a year ago, he was knocked down in the third round and eventually lost by unanimous decision, giving him a clear sense of how lethal the undisputed super middleweight champion can be. Yet he still believes Crawford has what it takes to neutralize him.
The Plan for Crawford
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Berlanga was clear about what he expects from the Omaha native: “I think Crawford just has to be Crawford, show his IQ, prove why he’s a two-time undisputed world champion, and step in with confidence.”
For Berlanga, the key isn’t to chase a knockout but to rely on the intelligence and ring craft that have defined Crawford’s career. “As long as he uses his brain, he’ll be fine,” he added.

Can He Handle the Pressure?
The challenge is enormous. Crawford, undefeated at 41-0 with 31 knockouts, recently captured his fourth title in different divisions by defeating Israil Madrimov in August 2024. Now he’ll move up two weight classes to face the most dominant boxer of his generation.
The lingering question is whether he can withstand Canelo’s pressure for a full 12 rounds. Rivals like Jermell Charlo, Caleb Plant, and William Scull entered the ring with confidence, only to be dismantled by the Mexican star. Berlanga, however, is convinced this time will be different: “I have faith in him. I believe Crawford can do it. I don’t doubt it,” he concluded.
