The Departure…and Return of the King
Zlatan sets of transfer chase, the richest prize in sport gets underway, and La Liga dragged down by grubbiness. All this and more magic mushrooms of mirth in today’s Sports Burst

1) King Zlatan seeks new throne as footballer leaves PSG ‘a legend’
She loves me, she loves me not. She loves me, she loves me not. So be it. Spanish football loves me not.
Ideally, TFI Friday’s ramblings from the sparkling world of sport should have begun with enthusiastic exhortations of glee from Spain about the final weekend of La Liga which sees the title race and relegation places being decided. But the headlines out of La Primera concern stories of match-fixing and bribery. So La Liga has being bumped down the Sports Burst rankings for more honest fare, to give time to put some synchronized swimming style nose-clips on to deal with whiff.
There is none fare so honest and downright brilliant as King Zlatan of PSG who has announced after months of dithering that he is leaving the French capital after four years. Naturally, the super Swede bid farewell with modesty. “My last game at Parc des Princes. I came like a king, left like a legend.” King Zlatan the New Legend will now have a long line of suitors clutching bunches of flowers. But it is by no means the end of the line for Zlatan at PSG, as it will be the Return of the King with PSG announcing that he will come back after his playing career is over in a coaching capacity. Fire up beIN CONNECT from 3PM on Saturday to wave adieu to King Zlatan as he seeks a new Winterfell.
2) Pain of the playoffs begin as Seagulls take on Owls
Over to a huge game in England’s Championship that will have commitment pouring out of its hair follicles. The ultimate prize for the teams involved is a potential $200 million to be earned in the Premier League. Yes, it’s play-off time, with the semifinals kicking off. First up on Friday, it’s Sheffield Wednesday versus Brighton and Hove Albion, a team separated by 14 points in the regular season and four places.
But weirdly, the Owls might hold the advantage over Brighton enjoying the benefit of momentum, unlike the Seagulls who suffered the down-and-out feeling of failing to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League last weekend. That clash is live on beIN SPORTS from 2.30PM ET with Derby County taking on Hull City on Saturday morning from 7.25PM ET.
3) La Liga’s finale blighted by match-fixing madness
Time to wade into La Liga, where all the talk unfortunately has been of match-fixing, both of sides paying others to win games, and also lose them too. For this reason, the Rayo Vallecano squad went before the media in Madrid on Friday to deny that they threw last weekend’s game at Real Sociedad which ended in a 2-1 loss. Javier Tebas, the head of La Liga, says that the match is under investigation for “unusual betting patterns.” Reports also say that Granada’s recent win over Las Palmas is also under investigation.
Zinedine Zidane has spoken about allegations that Granada have been paid an incentive to give it a little bit of extra gas in their clash with Barcelona, but denies any knowledge. “I don't know what you're talking about – honestly,” said Zidane when questioned. Tune into the XTRA tonight from 10PM ET for all the latest in the build up to the finale in La Liga and make sure you catch the big double-header on Saturday at 11PM ET.
4) Quique says farewell to Watford as Arsene Wenger brings good news for Gunners
A second Spanish manager in the EPL has left his club in the past two days. Roberto Martinez was given his marching orders by Everton on Thursday. A day later, the very sexy beast that is Quique Sanchez Flores has announced that he will not be extending his contract with Watford. Which is quite odd considering the former Valencia boss has led the Hornets to a season of security after predictions of a return to the Championship. “The club and me don’t have the same point of view about the season,” confirmed Quique after a meeting with his bosses.
In other EPL news, Arsene Wenger has given Arsenal fans good cheer for a Friday by denying that he has agreed to a contract extension to a deal that expires next summer. "It is completely wrong. I don't know where it has come from. You can treat that as an invention," retorted the Frenchman.
John Terry has been offered a new one-year deal by Chelsea. John Terry is considering it, before moving to LA Galaxy and living above Steven Gerrard’s garage.
5) Giro keeps on keeping on as Superbikes hit with speed rout by rookie
The mental and physical torture regime disguised as a cycling event continues on Friday with Stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia, a sumptuous journey from Sulmona and Foligno and currently live on beIN SPORTS. Belgian rider, Tim Wellens, was the stage winner on Thursday, but Tom Dumoulin hangs onto the pink jersey.
A bit of a surprise in the Superbikes with rookie, Lorenzo Savadori, fastest in Friday’s practice ahead of Kentucky Kid, Nicky Hayden. As the latest round is taking place in Malaysia, it is a bit of a tough time-zone but Race 1 can be seen live on beIN CONNECT on Saturday morning from 3.45AM ET.
