Sports Burst – Neymar’s Millennial Move
Neymar’s two states, double Madrid move, Gold Cup comedy.
By Tim Stannard
1) Barca head to USA with silence Neymar on board
Spicy! A powerful father and son trying to enrich themselves. Clandestine meetings that are only revealed after press investigations. Accusations of fake media and comprehensive denials of skullduggery.
Can only be two people. Neymar and his father of course! Day 3 of the Neymar to PSG saga is just as confusing as the others in this Schrödinger’s Cat of a transfer that exists in two forms at the same time: hot and cold.
But colder at the moment. Neymar is off to the USA on Wednesday with the team for some pre-season games. A deal to bring Neymar from Barcelona to PSG would reportedly cost the French club up to half a billion dollars in total with fees, taxes and salary thrown in, and Neymar himself hasn’t actually said he wants to leave…or stay.
Actually, the footballer hasn’t said anything except images jammed onto social media platforms of a day’s rest on a boat on Tuesday. Then again, Millennials don’t actually use words to communicate but employ duck-face selfies and emojis, so there might be some secret signals encoded into Neymar’s posts.

2) Danilo and Morata on brink of moves
Due to the natural balance in the universe over Barcelona and Real Madrid, if Sports Burst is going to talk about departures from one club, only makes sense to talk about departures from another. Alvara Morata is one name on the agenda – reportedly looking very somber indeed at the Madrid training camp in Los Angeles with his shaved, red hair, the striker is now said to be on his way to Chelsea after a move to Milan fell through.
Another footballer who could be making the same journey to cheer up Antonio Conte a day after the Italian extended his contract as Chelsea coach, is Danilo. Chelsea themselves are now off to China and Singapore for some friendlies, without Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa Nemanja Matic on board the plane.
3) No Naby move for Liverpool
TRANSFER TRACKER FOR EVERYONE ELSE!
Liverpool’s pursuit of Naby Keita looks increasingly forlorn. Another bid for the RB Leipzig midfielder was rebuffed despite being upwards of $75m. “We don’t sell any of our players just to get money,” said owner Dietrich Mateschitz.
West Ham United are adding another player to the roster after Joe Hart joined on loan, with Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic set to join for $30m from Stoke City.
This is a bit of desperate one, but we will take it. Anthony Martial’s cousin says Inter want the Manchester United forward.

4) Gold Cup returns, universe saved
Wondering what that aching void in your life was over the past few days is? That emptiness in your soul?
Well, it was the absence of the Gold Cup. But don’t worry, the tournament of the region’s best ‘B’ teams, countries that technically don’t exist and rosters that can be refreshed halfway through the tournament is back!
Wednesday sees the quarterfinal stages after the initial gaggle of 12 was reduced to eight and the USA are in action against El Salvador with Costa Rica taking on Panama in the earlier match. The winners will meet in the semifinals to literally and deliberately set up a money-spinning Mexico v USA final.
