Retired cricket great Sachin Tendulkar has congratulated a 15-year-old schoolboy for becoming the first player to score over 1000 runs in one innings.

Pranav Dhanawade hit an unbeaten 1009 during an inter-school tournament in India on Tuesday, a knock that included 129 fours and 59 sixes as he led Smt KC Gandhi School to 1465-3 against Arya Gurukul School in a Bhandari Cup match.

The youngster reached four figures off just 323 balls, breaking records along the way, while also catching the attention of India's greatest batsman.

Tendulkar – who scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests for India during his career – took to Twitter to praise Dhanawade, and challenged him to keep on improving.

"Congrats #PranavDhanawade on being the first ever to score 1000 runs in an innings," he posted. "Well done and work hard. You need to scale new peaks!"

India international Harbhajan Singh was equally impressed and compared the youngster to his former colleague.

Posting about Dhanawade's achievements, he wrote: "Well played…no matter what levels cricket it is but number are just unbelievable. Another @sachin_rt in making?"
