Rafa Marquez Returns To Liga MX With Atlas
The Mexico legend will return to the club where he got his start.
It's all coming full circle for Rafa Marquez.
After starting his career in Atlas' youth academy, Marquez will return to the Guadalajara side two decades after he made his professional debut, the club announced Sunday.
It's been an impressive 20 years, with Marquez winning league titles in France, Spain and Mexico, cups in France and Spain and lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup while at Barcelona.
He has captained El Tri in matches at four different World Cups and helped Mexico to a Confederations Cup win in 1999, Gold Cup titles in 2003 and 2011 and started as recently as October's triumph over the United States in the CONCACAF Cup.
It looked that his prestigious career had come to an end as he stumbled through a rough two years with the New York Red Bulls at the start of the decade. But upon returning to Liga MX, center back Marquez helped Leon to consecutive titles before moving to Hellas Verona after the 2014 World Cup.
It is from the struggling Italian club that Marquez will return, with new manager Gustavo Costas hoping to return the team to the postseason. In addition to Marquez's arrival, the club acquired midfielder Egidio Arevalo Rios on loan from Tigres and defender Rodrigo Salinas on loan from Tijuana in Wednesday's Liga MX draft. Los Zorros also signed Argentine goalkeeper Oscar Ustari from Newell's Old Boys.
Atlas opens the Clausura against Queretaro on Jan. 8.
