Allegri sees red as Napoli blows lead against Roma
Despite taking the lead twice at home, Napoli had to settle for a point in an end-to-end encounter against Serie A title contender Roma.
Leonardo Balerdi scored an 89th-minute equaliser as Roma fought its way from 0-2 down to a 3-3 draw, much to the annoyance of Napoli boss Massimiliano Allegri.
Napoli defender Sam Beukama had gone down next to Balerdi in the lead-up to the goal, but his injury appeared to have been feigned, and the real pain came when Balerdi rose unmarked as a result to head home the equaliser.
Incensed, Allegri was seen remonstrating on the touchline, resulting in a straight red card that further angered him as he stormed off the ground.
Balerdi scored twice for Roma at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after goals from Frank Anguissa and Scott McTominay had put Napoli in control.
Matias Soule triggered the comeback with a goal on 69 minutes before Balerdi got his first equaliser five minutes later.
McTominay fired home his second seven minutes from time and thought his brace had secured all three points for Napoli.
But Balerdi had other ideas to level on 89 minutes, assisted by Beukama's histrionics, and Napoli had to settle for a point.
The hosts had the better chances in the early stages, with Rasmus Hojlund seeing a shot blocked and McTominay volleying straight at Pierluigi Gollini, while Giovanni Di Lorenzo saw a low cross expertly cleared away by Devyne Rensch.
Alex Meret was alert to keep out Donyell Malen's driven effort with his legs, and Napoli eventually got its deserved opener in the 28th minute as Anguissa sent a bicycle kick into the bottom-right corner after Marten de Roon initially cleared a free-kick from Matteo Politano.
Gollini pulled off an incredible save to deny Mathias Olivera from close range, with Bryan Cristante also clearing the rebound off the line, but Napoli doubled its lead three minutes after the restart as McTominay headed in from another Politano delivery.
McTominay managed to deflect Soule's shot wide at the other end, but the Argentinean would not be denied in the 69th minute, when he curled into the far corner after a tidy one-two with Malen.
But only minutes later, Roma was level. Evan Ndicka won the initial header from De Roon's corner, and although the defender was blocked by team-mate Santiago Castro, Balerdi was on hand to lash in the loose ball.
Allegri made a host of changes in the hopes of regaining the lead, but it came from one of his starters, as McTominay took in a pass from Olivera and arrowed into the bottom-left corner.
However, there was time for one last twist as Balerdi timed his run perfectly to head Wesley's right-wing cross past Meret and snatch a point for the visitors.
