Missing a host of first team regulars, including Australia international midfielder Cameron Devlin and star striker Lawrence Shankland, Hearts struggled to find a foothold against their city rival.

Indeed arguably the best chance of the match fell to Devlin's Socceroos team-mate and Hibs attacker Martin Boyle, who blazed his shot over the bar from directly in front in the 69th minute.

With the match inching towards full-time Magnussen latched onto Harry Milne's pinpoint cross to fire the home side into the lead and send the Tynecastle Park crowd into raptures.

Hearts held on for a vital three points, with title rivals Rangers and Celtic yet to play. The latter has two games in hand after its match against Aberdeen last week was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
