Mbeumo strikes again as United draws with PSG
Bryan Mbeumo continued his scoring spree for Manchester United, netting again for the Red Devils in Gothenburg as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with UEFA Champions League holder Paris Saint-Germain.
The Cameroon international, who scored twice against Atletico Madrid in the club's previous pre-season fixture, swept home on the half-hour mark after good work from Amad Diallo, who had pressed high to win the ball before feeding it to Mbeumo to score.
PSG, fielding a side shorn of its biggest stars, raced out of the blocks to score in the second minute, Ibrahim Mbaye tapping home as excellent centre from Dro Fernandez cross.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, one of the few PSG stars to start, almost doubled the lead from the subsequent restart, but Tom Heaton pulled off a fine save to deny the Georgian.
Mbeumo's goal came after United settled into the game, and he could have had a second on 38 minutes after he won a free-kick on the edge of the box, but his shot over the wall was parried away by PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.
The Russian stopper made an even better stop early in the second half, diving to his right to deny Mbeumo with one hand.
Safonov was again in the heat of things when he charged out of his area on 72 minutes to meet a ball intended for Joshua Zirkzee, clattering into the United forward just inside the PSG half, leaving his goal empty and the Dutchman on the floor. But Shea Lacey couldn't finish the move after PSG's defence raced back to cover.
United had other chances to win it late on, but the game ended level, and while United boss Michael Carrick was happy enough with the result, he felt his side should have scored more goals.
"Very different to what we've played against, the boys adapted really well, so there were a lot of positives from the game. The things we were trying to get out of the game, a lot of it was there," he said.
"It's good for the boys sometimes to have to problem solve and find their own way and I thought we did that.
"That prepares them for the season as well. In that respect there were a lot of things that maybe people don't always see that we were quite happy with. There were some good signs there."
The only sour notes for United were injuries to Mason Mount, who had to leave the field with an apparent foot injury after just 20 minutes, and Heaton, who looked to have tweaked a hamstring performing a goal-kick early in the second half, with no news yet available on the extent of the issues.
Manchester United kicks off its 2026-2027 Premier League campaign on 22 August with a trip to newly-promoted Hull City.
