Kane left with 'empty feeling' after England's World Cup exit
England suffered a late defeat in their World Cup semi-final against Argentina, and captain Harry Kane voiced his disappointment.
England captain Harry Kane was left with an "empty feeling" after their World Cup semi-final exit.
The Three Lions lost 2-1 to Argentina on Wednesday, following late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez for the defending champions.
Having won their first World Cup semi-final in 1966, England have now been eliminated in each of their last three matches at this stage (1990, 2018, 2026).
And there are just two occasions of a team scoring first in the semi-final but not reaching the final of the World Cup in the 21st century – both of them are England (v Croatia in 2018 and Argentina in 2026).
Kane did not manage a single touch in the opposition box against Argentina, only the third time he has failed to do so in a major tournament game (Euro 2016 vs Russia, Euro 2020 final vs Italy).
The Bayern Munich striker revealed his disappointment after their exit, but is determined to bounce back on the international stage.
"No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach," Kane said on X account.
"We were close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough. We’ve given everything over these last seven weeks and to fall short is hard to take!
"I know the expectations are high and rightly so, we’ve been knocking on the door for 8 years now but again are missing that final piece of the jigsaw!
"That’s where we have to go away, process it and find a way to get better. I’m so proud of the boys and what we have shown throughout this tournament - some tough games and tough environments that we have overcome.
"Going for glory doesn’t always mean you will get it. You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again and that’s what we will do, there’s no other way but to keep believing and keep pushing."
England will face France in Saturday's third-place play-off match; the Three Lions have lost both of their previous third-place play-off games.
