Emiliano Buendia said Aston Villa could be proud of their performance in Wednesday's Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, believing this is the dawn of a new era for Unai Emery's side.

Villa were beaten 2-1 by Luis Enrique's PSG in Salzburg, with Desire Doue's 61st-minute strike helping the European champions retain another continental trophy. 

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's stunning finish had given PSG the lead in the 20th minute, only for Brian Madjo, aged 17 years and 212 days, to score on the stroke of half-time to become the youngest scorer in Super Cup history. 

However, PSG restored their advantage just past the hour through Doue, who was originally flagged offside but saw his goal awarded after a VAR review.

Villa pushed the Champions League holders right until the end, but they were unable to take the game to extra time as PSG became just the fourth team to retain the Super Cup, and the first since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. 

It has been a period of change this summer at Villa Park, with Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Lucas Digne all leaving the club, while Emiliano Martinez, Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa were also absent against PSG following deep runs at the World Cup.

When asked if this was a new era at Villa Park, Buendia told TNT Sports: "Yes, football is like this.

"There are changes but the structure and philosophy are here. We know the structure and have to move on."

In what was just Villa's second appearance in the Super Cup, they were perhaps unfortunate not to at least take PSG to extra time, having created a plethora of chances. 

They finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.13 from their 15 shots, four of which were on target, compared to PSG's tally of 1.03 xG from 12 attempts. 

"Not a good feeling. We can be proud of the game we did. We competed well. We had chances," Buendia conceded. 

"They are top players. They get chances, they score and they win the game.

"We were there and competed very well [at 1-1]. At the end of the first half, we had chances. In the second half we were showing character."

But PSG were given an almighty scare by Emery's men, with Madjo, who became the youngest player to start a Super Cup final on record (since 2006), key to that. 

Madjo finished with team-high totals for shots (six), touches in the opposition box (eight) and aerial duels (eight), while also becoming Villa's youngest scorer in any competition since Louie Barry (17 years, 201 days) against Liverpool in the FA Cup back in January 2021. 

And Buendia was full of praise for the Villa youngster, saying: "I tried to help him. He is young but he has good development."

Emery and Villa will now turn their attention to their final pre-season game against Borussia Monchengladbach this Saturday, before their Premier League campaign begins on August 23 away to Brighton.
