Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos has urged his team-mates to "keep making history" ahead of the Super Cup on Wednesday.

Champions League winners PSG face Europa League victors Aston Villa at Red Bull Arena as Luis Enrique's side look to defend their title.

PSG are looking to become just the fourth team to retain the European/Super Cup, after Ajax (1973, 1974), AC Milan (1989, 1990) and Real Madrid (2016, 2017).

The Ligue 1 giants have already made plenty of history. They are only the third side ever to win both their league title and the European Cup/Champions League in back-to-back seasons, after Madrid (1956-57/1957-58) and Ajax (1971-72/1972-73).

They are also the first French team ever to win the European Cup/Champions League in consecutive editions.

However, Marquinhos' desire to keep winning has not faded, and he encouraged his team-mates to follow the example of their head coach.

"He's a coach who knows how to get his messages across to the players," Marquinhos said about Luis Enrique.

"He's very ambitious, but he's very clear about what he expects from everyone at every moment of the season. He knows that we might not be at full throttle right away, but we have a title to play for on Wednesday.

"Even if we've won trophies, we have to keep winning titles, keep making history.

"That's our goal. We know it's tough. We know the path and how difficult it is. Even without much training, it starts on Wednesday.

"When you have a chance to win a title, you have to win it. That's how I am, I always want more titles. Everyone will do their best for Wednesday's match.

"The team on the field will give everything to try and win."

Since winning the Europa League, Villa have sold Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne this summer, with the latter returning to PSG.

Unai Emery's side have won three of their six pre-season games, losing to Bayern Munich, Real Sociedad and Porto.

Paris Saint-Germain – Vitinha

Vitinha's 141 completed passes for PSG in the 2026 Champions League final were the joint-most by a player in the competition's showpiece on record (since 2003-04), along with Xavi for Barcelona in 2011 (141 v Manchester United).

Vitinha completed 100+ passes in nine different matches in the tournament last term, also the joint-most by a player in a single edition on record, along with Xavi in 2010-11.

Aston Villa – Ollie Watkins

With the departure of Rogers, the onus will be on Ollie Watkins to step up for the Premier League side.

The striker ended the 2025-26 Premier League campaign in stellar form, scoring five goals and providing one assist across his last three games.

MATCH PREDICTION – PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN WIN

This is just the third meeting between the two teams after the 2024-25 Champions League quarter-final, with PSG winning 3-1 at home and losing 3-2 away to progress 5-4 on aggregate.

PSG have scored in their last 28 games in all competitions since a 1-0 loss to Paris FC in January. It's their longest scoring streak since a 36-game run between September 2019 and July 2020.

Luis Enrique has also won both of his appearances in the Super Cup. His PSG side triumphed on penalties against Tottenham last year, while back in 2015, his Barcelona team beat Emery's Sevilla 5-4, in what is the highest-scoring single Super Cup match to date.

Emery, meanwhile, has lost all three of his appearances in the Super Cup, losing with Sevilla against Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2014 and 2015 respectively, and then losing on penalties to Chelsea with Villarreal in 2021.

And history does not bode well for Villa, as the Europa League holders have won the Super Cup in just one of the last 13 seasons, with Atletico Madrid beating Real Madrid 4-2 in 2018.
