Gennaro Gattuso believes Lazio can sustain their surprise push at the top of Serie A if they take things one game at a time, following Sunday's eye-catching win over Juventus.
Gattuso confident Lazio can continue surprising people
Lazio are only behind Serie A leaders Inter on goal difference after their huge win over Juventus, and they could go top outright this week.
Oliver Provstgaard, Gustav Isaksen and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru were on target as the Biancocelesti claimed a statement 3-0 victory at the Allianz Stadium, a result that moved them back level with Inter at the top of Serie A.
It was just the third time in Lazio's Serie A history that they had beaten Juventus by at least three goals away from home, after 3-0 victories in March 1964 and May 1995.
With 19 points from seven matches in 2026-27, Lazio have made their best-ever start to a Serie A campaign at this stage, while Gattuso is the first coach in their history to win six of his first seven games in charge in the competition.
While the former Italy boss is not getting carried away with his team's flying start, he believes anything is possible if they stay focused.
"We must not look at the table right now. We'll enjoy this marvellous victory, but then it's heads down and back to work ahead of Parma," Gattuso told DAZN Italia.
"We're not accustomed to being up there, and maybe we're not ready to be there either, but if we take it one game at a time, we can surprise people.
"The mentality and hunger were important, as we went into half-time 1-0 up, and we ran risks in the games against Milan and Venezia, but this time, I think we took another step forward in terms of controlling the match.
"This is why I feel this is progress, because we are all or nothing; we don't yet have the maturity to control a lead.
"That is why we've always got to push with intensity, as that is what got us this win."
Lazio only had a modest €16m spend in their first transfer window under Gattuso, but the likes of Davide Frattesi and Josip Sutalo have become immediate contributors, and he feels the Biancocelesti did a good job of seeking out strong characters.
"It is the first time I've won here since I started this profession. My staff and I propose ideas, but it's the lads who put them into practice, so they deserve the credit," he said.
"We push hard in training, but we've created a real family unit here.
"The club also deserves compliments, as we had little money for the transfer market, but we went looking for good people who were determined, who wanted to come here at all costs. It took a while, we didn't have a lot of money, but it's easy for me to coach them."
Lazio are at home to Parma on Saturday, and with Inter not facing Fiorentina until the following day, a victory in that game would take Gattuso's men top of the table outright.
