Brighton stuns Arsenal with sensational win
Arsenal's perfect start to its Premier League title defence was halted in crushing fashion as Brighton and Hove Albion thrashed Mikel Arteta's side 3-0 at American Express Stadium.
The Gunners were comfortably off the pace on the south coast as the Seabulls, now the Premier League's leading scorers in 2026-2027, climbed to third on the table with a ruthless display.
Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andres were on the scoresheet for Fabian Hurzeler's side, and the final scoreline arguably flattered Arsenal, if anything, as Pascal Struijk, Matt O'Riley and Malick Yalcouye all went close to adding a fourth goal.
Arsenal did not settle at all in the early stages, with Brighton's high press causing several nervy moments for the Gunners as they attempted to play out from the back.
One of those instances saw David Raya pass straight to Yasin Ayari, with only a strong recovery challenge from Declan Rice denying him a clear shot at goal, soon after the Arsenal goalkeeper had dived to his right to tip Kostoulas's drive around the post.
Brighton deservedly took the lead in the 31st minute. Gross was afforded far too much time and space 20 yards out, slightly to the right of the D, and his shot thumped off the base of the near post and in.
It was a similar story for Brighton's second goal in the 45th minute, as both Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes backed off Kostoulas, who picked out the bottom-left corner from 25 yards.
Arteta would have expected a much-improved showing after half-time, but he got nothing of the sort as Brighton struck again just before the hour mark.
Gross swung a deep corner delivery in from the left, and with Raya rooted to his line, Chema towered above Gabriel and Martin Odegaard to head home on his first Premier League start, aided by a touch off the near post.
Arsenal almost conceded another set-piece goal when Struijk stole a march on Raya and nodded wide, while Kostoulas also had a penalty appeal waved away after a desperate lunge from Gabriel.
Kai Havertz squandered Arsenal's only real chance to provoke some anxiety among the home fans, and Brighton had several opportunities to make the scoreline even more handsome late on.
Georginio Rutter turned wide from Maxim De Cuyper's cross-shot and O'Riley was thwarted by Raya after a glorious move, with Yalcouye striking the woodwork on the follow-up from the latter chance, with Arsenal fortunate to lose only by three.
Arteta was left bitterly disappointed but felt the defeat could spur Arsenal on.
"First of all, congratulations to Brighton," he said.
"I am really disappointed. In the first 20 or 30 minutes, the number of technical errors put us constantly under pressure. It was all related to the start.
"It's a big lesson to learn. What the team has done since the World Cup has been remarkable. But there is a lot to learn.
"Credit to Brighton for what they have done. I think we were very far from our level. The international break means we have more time to swallow because it's very, very painful. In any game, you can get highly exposed if you don't do what you need to do.
"We were below the standards that are required for us."
Hurzeler expressed his joy after a stunning display from his team, but knows it must maintain its momentum after the international break.
"It was a special win. Not only because we played the best team in England but because of the performance. I am really proud of my team," Hurzeler said.
"It's always important to enjoy these moments. We were horrible to play against.
"Intensity, intensity, winning the personal duels – we have to have the belief to compete with the best teams in the league.
"My players really trust each other on the pitch. If one player is out, then another can replace him.
"Overall, we wanted to be really good in every phase. We needed to be at the highest level. We go game by game. After the international break, we have a lot of games.
"After wins like this, we have to stay humble and understand why we had this win. We have to keep on going."
