Wrexham sinks Swans to strengthen grip on top-six
Nathan Broadhead scored another crucial goal for Wrexham as it defeated Welsh rival Swansea City 2-0 at The Racecourse Ground to strengthen its grip on a place in the top six.
Broadhead opened the scoring before Liam Cullen's own goal secured victory for the hosts, while goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo made two crucial saves to help ensure that his side will remain in the play-off places of the EFL Championship over the weekend.
Swansea should have taken the lead in the 21st minute when Zan Vipotnik was played through on goal, but the forward saw his low-driven attempt kept out by a strong hand from Okonkwo.
Not long after that, Broadhead broke the deadlock. He was picked out in the box by Callum Doyle before dribbling past Cameron Burgess and shooting into the bottom-right corner, despite Swans goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux's attempted save.
Okonkwo was called into action again shortly after the hour mark, quickly getting down to his right to tip Marko Stamenic's powerful strike around the post as Swansea upped the pressure in search of an equaliser.
However, the goalkeeper's efforts were rewarded at the other end as Doyle saw his close-range header inadvertently diverted in by Cullen in the 88th minute to seal all three points.
Wrexham has only lost one of 16 home Football League games against Swansea, and for boss Phil Parkinson, it was a first victory in 10 attempts against the team from the south of Wales.
