Miguel Gutierrez starred from left-back, assisting both Equi Fernandez and Facundo Medina in the first half, while Patrik Schick and Ibrahim Maza sealed a comfortable victory for the hosts after the break.

Leverkusen was ahead after just 41 seconds as Maza's flick was kept in play by Gutierrez, who teed up Fernandez for a simple finish inside the six-yard box as Union was caught cold.

Schick saw a header rattle the crossbar just before the half-hour mark, but Leverkusen would double its lead moments later as it worked the ball back out to Gutierrez, whose pinpoint cross was headed in by Medina.

The Czech striker got on the scoresheet three minutes after the break as he was on hand to convert from Jarell Quansah's low centre, before he turned provider for Leverkusen's fourth.

Maza played a give-and-go with Schick before dancing past two defenders and picking out the bottom-right corner in the 66th minute, allowing Leverkusen to see out the win  comfortably while holding on to its clean sheet.
