Vitoria wins first Taca da Liga in dramatic style
Vitoria SC was crowned Taca da Liga champion for the first time in the Portuguese club's history after a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 victory over fierce rival Braga.
It was the first time Portugal's league cup had seen a Derby do Minho final between these two near-neighbours, and it more than lived up to expectations.
Braga went ahead after 17 minutes courtesy of an exquisite free-kick from Mario Dorgeles, who fired home from outside the box in stunning fashion.
But Braga lost control in the second half, allowing Vitoria back into the contest, but it was a controversial penalty that gave it the chance to level matters.
The spot-kick was awarded just before the hour by the video assistant referee (VAR) for a dubious handball after neither the onfield referee nor players from either side had questioned the passage of play under his scrutiny.
After being called to the pitchside monitor, though, onfield referee Helder Malheiro agreed with his bunkered colleagues and awarded the spot-kick, and Samu made no mistake to make it 1-1.
It was deep into the second half that Vitoria took the lead when Alioune Ndoye rose above the Braga defence to power home a header from a corner he had won. But the drama was far from over.
With nine minutes of stoppage-time added, Braga won a penalty in the 97th minute when Joao Mendes was adjudged to have elbowed Braga fullback Victor Gomez as they went up to challenge for the ball with their heads. Mendes was dismissed for the foul after receiving a second yellow card, with VAR confirming the decision.
Rodrigo Zalazar, the hero of Braga's semi-final win over Benfica last week, stepped up to take the spot-kick, firing it low and true to goalkeeper Charles's right, but the Vitoria stopper guessed right and pulled of a superb save to keep his side in front to the final whistle.
Chaos ensued as the celebrations began thereafter, Vitoria not only winning the Taca da Liga for the first time, but claiming only the third trophy from all competitions in the club's history.
