Maradona's Last Game For Boca Juniors
The soccer icon hung up his boots five days after leading Boca to a 2-1 win in El Superclasico.
Diego Maradona played his last professional match on October 25th, 1997, at the Estadio Monumental de Nunez in Buenos Aires, wearing the jersey of Boca Juniors at a Superclasico against eternal arch rivals River Plate.
The 1986 World Cup champion played for 45 minutes before being replaced by a young Juan Roman Riquelme, who would eventually become a Boca Juniors and Argentina national team icon in his own right.
Second half goals by Julio Cesar Toresani and Martin Palermo saw Boca come from behind to secure a 2-1 win over their bitter rivals.
Five days later, on the day of his 37th birthday, Maradona announced his retirement from professional football.
The 60-year-old had been in hospital in Buenos Aires after surgery to remove a blood clot on the brain earlier this month.
