Miguel Herrera Ready For Club Tijuana Challenge And Move On From Mexico
The former Mexico manager says he made a mistake this summer but has learned from it and hopes for success at Tijuana.
Miguel Herrera is ready for 2016.
The former Mexico manager took El Tri to a continental championship in 2015. Just hours after the Gold Cup triumph, though, Herrera was out of a job. The manager and TV Azteca commentator Christian Martinoli, one of Herrera's strongest critics, were involved in a physical altercation at the Philadelphia airport. Herrera got his marching orders.
Now, after six months away from the game, Herrera is taking over at Club Tijuana, looking to get the border club back into the postseason after consecutive tournaments out of the top eight. He told Goal Mexico that he's looking to learn from the past and again find success.
"I can agree or not [about how things went]," Herrera said "It's not even worth the trouble to think about what happened, but one must learn from that and think about what's next to do things well and to hope to do things well to get back and knock on the door."
Before taking over as Mexico manager ahead of a playoff to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, Herrera managed Club America to a Liga MX title in the 2013 Clausura. Herrera said he takes pride in his accomplishments with the national team and has a record that can speak for itself.
"You learn in the life from the hard hits life gives you and that was a very strong one." he said. "Not everybody can say they left the national team as champion, we left as champions because of the directors' decisions, there's the trophy and the medal. Fortunately, on that front we're totally calm."
The manager used his time off to spend time with his family, including a grandson born just after the Gold Cup triumph. And while Herrera has always been focused on the sport that saw him achieve success first as a player and then as a manager, he said he valued his personal life more highly than his career.
"The most important of all was my family, being with them with a new addition to the family," he said. "There are things that are more important to me than soccer."
