Joel Aguilar To Referee Crucial USA And Mexico Clash In CONCACAF Cup
The Salvadoran referee has called the last several Gold Cup finals and will take the whistle in October's playoff.
We've long known the teams, and know it appears we know who will officiate the CONCACAF Cup.
The United States and Mexico meet Oct. 10 in a playoff for CONCACAF's spot at the 2017 Confederations Cup, and Salvadoran referee Joel Aguilar will be in the middle, according to the El Salvador Football Federation [FESFUT by its Spanish title].
"In the middle of the week the FESFUT received the notification that Joel is going to direct the match between Mexico and the United States," FESFUT secretary for referee committee Rafael Rodriguez told El Grafico.
The newspaper also reported Aguilar's countryman Juan Francisco Zumba will be one of the assistant referees with Marlon Alfonso Mejía playing the role of the fourth officials. Marco Leal, a Costa Rican, is set to be the other assistant.
American fans will best remember Aguilar for overseeing a 2013 World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica in Colorado. The United States took a 1-0 victory despite the Ticos protesting it should not have been played because of heavy snowfall.
The 40-year-old oversaw this year's Gold Cup final, which saw Mexico top Jamaica to earn a spot in next month's match. He also officiated the 2011 and 2013 Gold Cup finals. In addition to regional matches, Aguilar called two matches at the 2014 World Cup. He was selected as an official for the 2010 World Cup but was a reserve official and did not referee any games.
