Copa America Venues: Concepcion
Concepción: Gateway to the south of Chile
The gateway to the south of Chile, Concepción is the second-largest urban centre with a unique culture and heritage with a mixture of industry and intellectuals.
The people of Concepción have had to overcome several major natural disasters, including the devastating earthquake of February 2010, which measured 8.8 on the Richter scale and was felt almost 3,300km away in Sâo Paulo, Brazil.
STADIUM
Opened on September 16, 1962, the stadium ‘Ester Roa’ is home to three teams from the city - Deportes Concepción, Arturo Fernández Vial and Universidad de Concepción and has a capacity of 35,000.
The stadium has undergone major renovation to make it an all-seater arena, with the playing surface moved and a roof added.
Named in honour of the mayor who started the project in 1956, the ground previously hosted the Copa América in 1991 and was also the venue for the 2003 Olympic qualifiers.
