Karim Bellarabi set up Calhanoglu in the 57th minute. Substitute Fernando Torres thought he'd equalized with a header from a corner in the 75th, but the ball went out of play before coming back in. Atletico's Tiago was dismissed in the 77th with a second yellow card for sliding in on Bellarabi.

    2/16 Europa League holders Sevilla produced a devastating display of counter-attacking football to beat 10-man Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2 and secure their place in the last 16. There were four goals inside the first 30 minutes as Borussia strived to cancel out a one-goal deficit, efforts from Granit Xhaka and Thorgan Hazard pegging Sevilla back after Carlos Bacca and then Vitolo had put them ahead on the night. Vitolo scored again to complete a 4-2 aggregate success.
  • Chelsea beats Tottenham 2-0 in Capital One Cup Final
    3/16 Captain John Terry led Chelsea to its first trophy in two years, scoring the opener in a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the League Cup final. Although Tottenham displayed more attacking desire in the first half, Terry made the breakthrough in the 45th minute when his strike took a slight deflection off defender Eric Dier. Another Tottenham defender, Kyle Walker, deflected striker Diego Costa's shot into the net in the 56th to secure Chelsea's first trophy since the 2013 Europa League.

    4/16 Veteran striker Dimitar Berbatov demonstrated his enduring quality by inspiring Monaco to a 3-1 victory over Arsenal, when he finished off a rapid counterattack in the 53rd minute. Monaco's opened the score in the 38th, with Geoffrey Kondogbia's deflected strike wrong-footing goalkeeper David Ospina. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's curling strike in stoppage gave some hope to Arsenal, but Monaco had time to restore its two-goal cushion through Yannick Carrasco.

    5/16 Finally, defending champion Roger Federer won his seventh Dubai Championships title and second of the year in defeating top-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-3, 7-5. This marked the seventh consecutive year — 11th time in 13 years — that Federer or Djokovic won this title. The only other tournaments Federer won seven times are Wimbledon, and Halle, Germany, both on grass.
  • LeBron passes Pippen for most NBA assists by a forward
    6/16 LeBron James had 11 assists in Cleveland's 102-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons. In the process, he moved past Scottie Pippen for first place on the NBA career list for forwards. James has 6,142 assists, seven more than Pippen.
  • Alonso leaves hospital after F1 crash, FIA investigates
    7/16 McLaren driver Fernando Alonso left hospital following a crash in Formula One testing as the sport's governing body FIA launched an investigation into the accident. The Spanish driver escaped serious injury but was flown to hospital for precautionary checks after his McLaren hit a wall at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit.
  • Europa League: Guarin goal qualified Inter to last 16
    8/16 Fredy Guarin's superb late goal was enough to see Inter through to the last 16 of the Europa League with a 4-3 aggregate success over 10-man Celtic. Inter were well on top and only some last-ditch defending and a fine goalkeeping display from Craig Gordon kept the scores level until Guarin produced something special in the 88th minute. The Colombian picked up a pass from Davide Santon and arrowed a shot into the top corner from just outside the area.
  • FIFA closes on dates for taboo-breaking World Cup in Qatar
    9/16 The World Cup in Qatar keeps provoking outrage and breaking taboos. Seven years before the 2022 tournament kicks off in the wealthy emirate, FIFA recommended a break with soccer tradition — moving its marquee tournament to November and December instead of the usual June-July time slot. FIFA president Sepp Blatter wants the 2022 World Cup final to take place no later than Dec. 18, a date that would avoid a conflict with the powerful Premier League over the Christmas schedule in England.
  • Irish take control of 6 Nations with 19-9 win over England
    10/16 Ireland took control of its Six Nations destiny with a 19-9 victory over England that kept the unbeaten Irish on course for a Grand Slam and extended their winning streak to a team-record 10. Ireland broke open a try-less slugfest early in the second half as Conor Murray's box kick found a leaping Robbie Henshaw in the right corner of the in-goal area. Jonathan Sexton's conversion put Ireland 19-3 ahead. George Ford's two penalties were all England could muster in reply.
  • Champions League: With Suarez double, Barcelona beat Manchester City 2-1
    11/16 Luis Suarez scored both of Barcelona's goals in a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League. However, Lionel Messi had a penalty saved in the final seconds of the last-16 first leg at Etihad Stadium. Suarez scored close-range goals in the 16th and 30th minutes. Sergio Aguero slotted in a 69th-minute goal after fine build-up play. City's momentum in the second half stalled when defender Gael Clichy was sent off in the 73rd for getting a second yellow card.
  • Former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro handed 10-month jail sentence
    12/16 Fabio Cannavaro has been handed a 10-month prison sentence after breaching orders to keep out of his property during a police investigation. The World Cup-winning former Italy captain was the centre of a tax probe which saw over €1 million in his property being seized, but Cannavaro was caught swimming in his luxurious house’s swimming pool with his wife.
  • Champions League: Juventus beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1
    13/16 Juventus settled for a narrow 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie. Carlos Tevez fired Juventus ahead in the 13th minute but Dortmund soon leveled through striker Marco Reus following a terrible slip by Giorgio Chiellini. Alvaro Morata, who had set up the opener, restored Juve's lead shortly before halftime.
