LA Galaxy general manager Dennis te Kloese has revealed that the club are attempting to negotiate a €9 million (£8m/$10m) deal for Sevilla striker Javier Hernandez in the January transfer window.

Hernandez moved to Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium from West Ham on September 2, signing a three-year deal with the Andalusian outfit.

However, the 31-year-old has struggled for regular playing time this season, with only four league starts and one goal to his name.

With the winter transfer window now open, rumours linking Hernandez with a move away from Sevilla have been swirling, with the MLS mooted as his most likely next destination.

The LA Galaxy have been credited with an interest in the Mexico international, which Te Kloese has now confirmed.

“I think he could be good for us,” Te Kloese told the LA Times. “We’ll give it a serious try.”

It is reported that Te Kloese would like to finalise a deal for Hernandez over the coming days, with the Galaxy's pre-season preparations set to get underway next weekend.

The MLS side have yet to bring in a replacement for talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left the club in November before returning to Italy for a second spell with AC Milan.

Hernandez is one of the most popular Mexican players in the United States and he could help to fill the void left by the Swede if he completes a switch to Dignity Health Sports Park before the end of January.

Back in November, the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid striker declared himself open to an MLS switch before the end of his career. 

He told the LA Times: “I want to be as open as I can to any opportunity, and then when I need to decide something in the future, those decisions, I will think about them and try to get the best one.

"MLS is a league that is improving. It is an opportunity. Every league is an opportunity.”

Hernandez could tread the same path as an international colleague if he decides to leave Sevilla, with Carlos Vela now on the books of Los Angeles FC.

Vela took up a new challenge in America after calling time on a five-year spell at Real Sociedad, and has since managed to score 48 goals in 59 appearances for LAFC.

However, Hernandez remains a Sevilla player for the time being, and is currently preparing with the rest of the squad for a crucial La Liga meeting with Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
