Toronto FC confirmed on Tuesday that the club has signed former U.S. national team forward Terrence Boyd.

The 27-year-old striker moves to MLS from Germany, where he had been playing for second-division side Darmstadt.

Boyd scored five goals in 44 appearances for the club after joining in 2017, but injuries continued to impact the striker.

The forward's career has been repeatedly set back by a number of long-term injuries, limiting him to just 14 USMNT caps, with the most recent appearance with the national team coming in October 2016.

“We are excited to welcome Terrence and his family to the club," said TFC general manager Ali Curtis. "Terrence is a player that we’ve tracked for years during his time with the U.S. National Team and in Germany.

“He is an experienced, attacking player that is capable of scoring goals in MLS. We’re looking forward to him joining our preseason and integrating himself into the group.”

Boyd previously featured for the likes of Bundesliga sides Hertha Berlin, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, but his most productive years came in Austria where he made 80 appearances for Rapid Wien, scoring 37 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

Giovinco Reluctantly Leaves Toronto

Toronto FC's addition of Boyd comes in the aftermath of Sebastian Giovinco's departure for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Giovinco had been Toronto's most productive attacker since reinvigorating the club by joining in 2015, scoring 83 goals in 142 appearances while leading TFC to the 2017 MLS Cup.

The Italian leaves MLS as the holder of several records, including most combined goals and assists in a single season and most free-kick goals, while also serving as TFC's highest-ever goalscorer.

Boyd joins Jozy Altidore, Jon Bakero, Ayo Akinola and Jordan Hamilton as the forward options currently on TFC's squad, although the club has been linked with a big-money move for a playmaker in the wake of Giovinco's departure.

One such target is Algerian Sofiane Hanni, who currently features for Spartak Moscow. Toronto FC has already added former Best XI defender Laurent Ciman and former D.C. United defender Nick DeLeon this offseason while currently holding the league's top spot in the Allocation Order, which would allow the club to add a U.S. national team player, U.S. youth national team player or a player who previously transferred out of MLS for a fee of more than $500,000. The club originally used that spot to select Ciman, but traded back into the top position by sending defender Nick Hagglund to expansion side FC Cincinnati.  The MLS campaign does not begin until the first weekend of March, but Toronto FC is set ot take on Panama's Independiente to kickstart Concacaf Champions League play on February 19.
