French Open: Andreeva claims comeback victory as Paolini crashes out
Mirra Andreeva notched her 50th career victory on clay, but the teenager had to work hard to progress to round three at Roland-Garros.
Mirra Andreeva required a comeback victory over Marina Bassols Ribera to book her place in the French Open third round, but Jasmine Paolini crashed out at Roland-Garros.
The 19-year-old recovered from a slow start to prevail 3-6 6-1 6-1 and maintain her record of reaching the last 32 on all four of her appearances at the clay-court major.
Andreeva fell behind as she was broken twice in as many service games by her Spanish opponent during the opening set.
However, the 2024 semi-finalist responded in emphatic fashion, winning 12 of the next 14 games to eventually come through a commanding victor.
Andreeva will be joined in round three by world number 68 Solana Sierra, who came from behind to stun 2024 runner-up Paolini on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
All seemed to be going to plan for Paolini when she broke in game eight on the way to winning the opening set, and again early in the second to lead 4-2.
Yet, back came Sierra with seven successive games to level the contest, before going 3-0 to the good in the decider.
The Argentine responded immediately to Paolini's break in game five, and subsequently held out for a superb victory.
Data Debrief: Teenage sensation Andreeva chasing Wozniacki
Andreeva became only the third teenager this century to register 50 or more WTA-level match wins on clay, after Caroline Wozniacki (54) and Vera Zvonareva (50).
The eighth seed converted six of her 10 break-point opportunities, but she will have to improve against 27th seed Marie Bouzkova in round three, after hitting 43 unforced errors to 24 winners.
Sierra, meanwhile, struck 32 winners to Paolini's 13 as she continued her groundbreaking run at Roland-Garros, where 18th seed Sorana Cirstea awaits in the last 32.
