Reports: SoFi Stadium Threatens to Withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The countdown continues, and in the meantime, the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California, is at risk of being excluded as a venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to a lack of commercial agreements.
This is revealed by The Athletic newspaper, mentioning that the stadium's owning company, Kroenke Sports Entertainment (KSE), disagrees with the profit distribution during the event.
Multiple sources have told the publication that the owners were expecting the initial payments to be recouped through commercial assets such as sponsorships, ticket sales, hospitality, among other things. However, the projected figures by FIFA in December for each stadium have not been entirely clear.
The SoFi Stadium has a capacity for 80,000 people and is one of the most important stadiums for the organization. In fact, it is slated to host the final of the 2026 World Cup, being the top choice with an advantage over New York and Texas.
Officials from FIFA and KSE are expected to meet soon to negotiate the terms of the contracts since the stadium owners are not willing to accept that the property be loaned and managed by the world football governing body during the World Championship.
