The Injury That Rules Nico Williams Out for Spain
Nico Williams will not be able to continue with the Spain national team during the current UEFA Nations League window. Athletic Club confirmed that the winger suffered a moderate muscle injury to his left rectus femoris during the match against Croatia.
Another setback for Luis de la Fuente during an international window that has already produced several injury concerns for Spain.
Nico Williams left the Spanish national team's camp on Thursday after undergoing medical tests for the discomfort he experienced following the match against Croatia at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
The RFEF initially reported that the Athletic Club winger finished the match with discomfort in his left thigh. His condition was closely monitored during the team's rest day, but the pain persisted and Nico was unable to train with the rest of his teammates on Thursday.
After further tests, the Federation's medical staff determined that the player was not fit to remain with the squad and cleared him to return to Bilbao.
Athletic Confirms a Moderate Muscle Injury
Hours later, Athletic Club provided a more precise diagnosis.
The Basque club confirmed in a medical report that Nico Williams suffered a moderate muscle injury to his left rectus femoris during the match between Spain and Croatia.
The winger's recovery will now be monitored as he continues his rehabilitation under the supervision of Athletic Club's medical staff. The RFEF stated that the club was kept informed throughout the process regarding the player's condition and progress.
The injury represents another setback for Nico, who has already dealt with muscular problems in recent months. In May, Athletic Club confirmed another moderate injury, that time affecting the hamstring muscles in his left leg.
Spain Loses Another Key Player for the Nations League
Nico Williams' departure forces Luis de la Fuente to continue the international window without one of his most important attacking options.
Spain still has two matches remaining during this international break. The world champions will host the Czech Republic on October 3 at the Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo before traveling to Split to face Croatia again on October 6.
La Roja enters those matches after opening this stage of the UEFA Nations League with two victories: a 3-2 comeback win over England at Wembley followed by a 4-1 victory against Croatia in Seville.
The priority for Nico Williams will now be to return to Bilbao and begin his recovery. Athletic Club did not establish a specific timetable for his return and stated only that his progress will determine when he can compete again.
