The Harsh Punishment Cristiano Ronaldo Could Face for Leaving Portugal Camp
The forward’s departure from the national team camp following his clash with Jorge Jesus could now carry major disciplinary consequences.
Cristiano Ronaldo could face serious consequences after leaving Portugal camp in Copenhagen amid growing tension with Jorge Jesus.
According to GOAL, the forward departed after a heated disagreement with the head coach and following talks with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. The situation came after Ronaldo remained an unused substitute against Norway.
The issue could go far beyond missing the Denmark match. Under FPF disciplinary regulations, leaving international duty without valid justification can result in a suspension ranging from one to six months, as well as a financial penalty for professional players.
FPF Rules Spell Out the Possible Punishment
As reported by ESPN, the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary code specifically addresses unauthorized absences from national-team duty.
“Any player who, having been duly called up, abandons or fails to attend training, a match, or any activity of the national teams [...] without justification shall be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months,” the regulations state.
Professional players can also receive an additional fine of between €500 and €1,000. Any potential punishment would now depend on how the federation assesses the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure.
Jorge Jesus Refuses to Back Down
The dispute reportedly escalated after Jorge Jesus publicly defended his decision over Ronaldo’s role in the team.
“I can promise whatever I want. I am the manager. I told the player he was not going to play. I’ll put him on the bench; if I need you for 30 minutes, you’ll play, and if not, you won’t,” Jesus said.
The coach went even further when defending his authority: *“No player will ever change my mind. Not him, not anyone in football. Not any president either. Never, zero.”*
The tension continued on the training ground. The FPF confirmed that Ronaldo did not take part in Wednesday’s session at Parken Stadium, while João Félix returned to the group and Francisco Conceição was also absent.
Portugal Move On Without Their Captain
Portugal now face Denmark in Copenhagen without their all-time leading scorer before taking on Norway again on Sunday.
The Scandinavian double-header therefore arrives with a dispute that has moved well beyond team selection and placed Jorge Jesus’ authority inside the dressing room under the spotlight.
The next decision rests with the federation: whether Ronaldo’s departure qualifies as an unjustified absence under its rules and, if so, whether disciplinary proceedings will follow against one of the greatest players in Portugal’s history.
What Is at Stake for Cristiano Ronaldo
- FPF rules allow suspensions of between one and six months for leaving national-team duty without justification.
- The federation must determine whether Ronaldo’s departure falls under that disciplinary provision.
- Portugal will continue their upcoming fixtures amid growing tension between Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus.
