Cristiano Ronaldo’s Goals in Portugal Before Jorge Jesus

  • Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41 years old, is once again at the center of debate in Portugal. After being relegated to the bench by Jorge Jesus

Cristiano Ronaldo in crisis with Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo, whose benching under the new Portuguese coach, Jorge Jesus, has led to one of the most tumultuous episodes in his 23 years with Portugal, responded with 28 goals in 37 matches to the trust that Roberto Martínez placed in him during his three years at the helm of the Portuguese team.

The numbers from the Spanish coach's tenure offer perspective to the debate now open in Portugal about the role Cristiano should play in the national team at 41 years old.

Martínez took charge of Portugal in January 2023, just a few weeks after Fernando Santos had benched the captain during the decisive phase of the Qatar World Cup.

Cristiano was then 37 years old, had just left European football to sign with Saudi Al Nassr, and his international continuity was in question.

The Spanish coach, however, chose to maintain his confidence in him, and Cristiano responded with 28 goals in the 37 matches he played during Martínez's tenure, which concluded after the 2026 World Cup.

He was Portugal's top scorer during those three years and, in addition, the second most used player by Martínez, only behind Bruno Fernandes, who participated in 41 matches.

The figure is particularly significant given the age at which Cristiano managed to maintain that level of performance: he played through the entire Martínez era between the ages of 37 and 41.

His average was 0.76 goals per match, close to the one recorded during the long period under Fernando Santos, with whom he scored 68 goals in 82 matches (0.83), and higher than those of his early coaches.

With Paulo Bento, he had scored 27 goals in 38 matches (0.71); with Luiz Felipe Scolari, 21 in 58 (0.36); and with Carlos Queiroz, two in 18 (0.11).

Decisive at 40

The last Nations League won by Portugal probably constitutes the most significant example of the scoring prowess that Cristiano maintained under Martínez's orders.

At 40 years old, Ronaldo finished the 2024-2025 edition with eight goals in nine matches and scored in both decisive games of the final phase held in Germany.

He scored the goal that gave Portugal a 2-1 victory against Germany in the semifinals and scored again in the final against Spain, where he made it 2-2, taking the match to extra time and subsequently to penalties.

Portugal won that shootout 5-3 and clinched their second Nations League, their third major title in history after the Euro 2016 and the first Nations League, won in 2019.

Ronaldo thus ended the tournament by lifting an international title at the age of 40 and having scored in both the semifinal and the final.

28 of Portugal's 110 goals

His offensive weight is also reflected in the overall balance of the Martínez stage.

Portugal scored 110 goals in the 45 matches managed by the Spanish coach, an average of 2.44 per game, and Cristiano was the author of 28 of them, approximately one in every four goals for the team during those three years.

Martínez ended his tenure with 30 victories, nine draws, and six losses, a 66.7% win rate, and with the 2025 Nations League as his main title.

The scenario is different just a few months later.

With Jorge Jesus on the bench, Cristiano was a substitute and did not play against Norway, something that hadn't happened to him when available for an official Portugal match since 2008.

The episode and his subsequent departure from the training camp have now opened a debate about the role the captain should play in this new stage of the national team.

The figures from the previous three years, in any case, leave an immediate reference: between the ages of 37 and 41, Cristiano played 37 matches with Roberto Martínez, scored 28 goals, and finished as the top scorer in a period during which Portugal won another international title. EFE
