Will Lamine Yamal Play for Barcelona in Their Champions League Opener Against Newcastle?
Barcelona’s European debut comes with bad news: Lamine Yamal skipped training and is set to miss the trip to Newcastle.
Lamine Yamal Doubtful for Champions League
Barcelona are preparing to kick off their 2025-26 Champions League campaign with a major setback. Lamine Yamal, just 18, missed Tuesday’s session at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and is almost certain to miss the clash with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
The winger has been struggling with pubic discomfort since his time with the Spanish national team, where he pushed himself to play two games despite being unable to train normally. That effort has taken its toll, leaving Hansi Flick without one of his most electric attacking weapons.
De Jong Returns, Academy Players Step Up
On the positive side, Frenkie de Jong is back in full training and will be available for the European opener. Academy players Diego Kochen, Jofre Torrents, and Toni Fernández also joined the squad to cover for the absentees.
Barcelona’s final training session will take place on Wednesday at St. James’ Park, with Flick set to announce the traveling squad earlier in the day. While the German coach has not ruled out a surprise, all signs suggest Yamal will remain in Barcelona to continue his recovery.

A Costly Absence
Yamal’s absence is both a tactical and emotional blow, as the youngster had quickly established himself as one of Barça’s most dangerous attacking outlets. Fans were eager to see him make his Champions League debut, but that dream will have to wait.
With De Jong back and trust in the rest of the squad, Flick now faces a tough opener in England without one of his brightest stars.
