Why Was Fenerbahçe’s Victory Over Liverpool Historic in the UEFA Champions League?

  • Fenerbahçe’s victory set European records, featured a rare milestone involving two English goalscorers, and ended a Liverpool streak that had stood since Lionel Messi’s free-kick goal in 2019.

Fenerbahçe ended an 18-year Champions League winless streak, came from behind twice to beat Liverpool, and set three historic records in European competition

Fenerbahçe secured one of the most significant victories in its recent history in the UEFA Champions League. The Turkish side defeated Liverpool 3-2, came from behind twice, and ended an 18-year wait for a victory in Europe's premier club competition. However, the result also produced several historic milestones that highlight the magnitude of the achievement.

The night in Istanbul not only delivered Fenerbahçe's first three points in the 2026-27 league phase, but also produced some rare records in European soccer and an unwanted statistic for the Reds.

LIVERPOOL SUFFERS A RARE DEFEAT

The loss was particularly significant for the English side. According to statistical records, it was only the third time in Liverpool's history in major European competitions that the Reds had taken the lead twice in a match and still ended up losing.

The previous occasions were a 4-2 defeat against Roma in May 2018 and a 3-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven in January 2025.

The result in Turkey highlighted Fenerbahçe's resilience, as the hosts found a way to overcome one of Europe's most successful clubs.

TWO ENGLISH PLAYERS SCORE AGAINST AN ENGLISH CLUB

Another remarkable statistic involved the goalscorers. Mason Greenwood and Archie Brown, both English players, found the net for Fenerbahçe against Liverpool.

It was only the third time in a major European competition that two English players had scored in the same match against a club from England.

The previous instances date back to September 1978, when Garry Birtles and Colin Barrett scored for Nottingham Forest against Liverpool, and April 2004, when Frank Lampard and Wayne Bridge did the same for Chelsea against Arsenal.

FENERBAHÇE SETS ANOTHER RECORD WITH A DIRECT FREE KICK

The victory also produced a milestone for the Turkish club: Fenerbahçe scored its first-ever direct free-kick goal in UEFA Champions League history.

The goal carried additional significance because of the opponent. Liverpool had not conceded a direct free-kick goal in the competition since May 2019, when Lionel Messi scored for Barcelona in the semifinals.

Fenerbahçe achieved much more than three points: it ended an 18-year drought, staged a historic comeback, and set three records that made its victory over Liverpool an unforgettable night for Turkish soccer.
