Fenerbahçe Is Falling Behind in the Title Race

Fenerbahçe entered the season expecting to challenge for the Süper Lig title. Ten matches later, the Istanbul giants find themselves in an increasingly difficult position. With just 16 points, Fenerbahçe sits sixth in the standings, far below expectations for one of Turkish football's biggest clubs.

The gap to league leader Galatasaray has already grown to nine points, with Amedspor and Trabzonspor also ahead of the Yellow Canaries.

And the standings are only part of the problem. Fenerbahçe has suffered back-to-back league defeats, lost a crucial derby against its biggest rival and now faces another coaching transition in a season that is quickly slipping away.

Two Defeats That Deepened the Crisis

The first major setback came on October 26, when Fenerbahçe lost 2-1 to Galatasaray in the Istanbul derby. The result ended a three-match winning streak in the Süper Lig and dealt another blow to its hopes of keeping pace at the top.

Five days later, Fenerbahçe suffered another frustrating defeat, this time at home against Göztepe. Despite taking the lead through Mattéo Guendouzi, the hosts eventually fell 2-1, once again struggling to maintain control of a match they had started well.

The numbers tell a worrying story: five wins, one draw and four defeats in ten league matches. Fenerbahçe has scored 24 goals and conceded ten, but its attacking production has done little to offset the points dropped in crucial games.

Another Managerial Change at Fenerbahçe

The poor results have also brought more upheaval to the dugout. İsmail Kartal resigned following the defeat to Galatasaray, prompting Fenerbahçe to appoint former Liverpool and Fenerbahçe midfielder Dirk Kuyt as interim manager.

That arrangement did not last long. On Tuesday, November 3, the club officially appointed Emre Belözoğlu, bringing back a familiar face who has previously represented Fenerbahçe as a player, sporting director and first-team coach.

Belözoğlu arrives from Kasımpaşa, which he leaves in fifth place with 17 points, one more than Fenerbahçe. During his previous spell in charge in 2021, he recorded seven wins, two draws and just one defeat in ten matches.

His immediate challenge is to bring stability back to the club and prevent the gap to the leading contenders from growing even wider.

Can Fenerbahçe Still Fight for the Süper Lig Title?

Despite its struggles, Fenerbahçe still boasts one of the most productive attacks in Turkish football, with 24 goals in ten matches. Players such as Romelu Lukaku, Mason Greenwood and Mattéo Guendouzi give the team enough individual quality to compete near the top of the table.

The real issue has been consistency. Fenerbahçe has shown its attacking potential with an 8-0 victory over Eyüpspor and a 3-0 win against Alanyaspor, yet it has also suffered defeats to Beşiktaş, Galatasaray and Göztepe. That gap between its best and worst performances has become the defining problem of its campaign.

Fenerbahçe's next league test comes on Sunday, November 8, away to Çorum FK, a match you can watch LIVE on beIN SPORTS. Before that, the Turkish side must face Liverpool in the Champions League, adding another demanding fixture to an already turbulent week.

Three Key Facts Behind Fenerbahçe's Crisis

  • Losing ground: Sixth place with 16 points, nine behind Galatasaray.
  • Inconsistent results: Four defeats in ten league matches, including consecutive losses to Galatasaray and Göztepe.
  • A new beginning: Emre Belözoğlu takes charge as Fenerbahçe looks to revive its title challenge.
