Fenerbahçe Open Talks for Edson Álvarez at Mourinho’s Request
Fenerbahçe have shaken up the transfer market with an unexpected move. The Turkish club, eager to strengthen their squad for the new season, have opened negotiations for Mexican midfielder Edson Álvarez, currently at West Ham United, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The approach comes directly at the request of José Mourinho, who believes the Mexico international could be the key to balancing the midfield of his side.
Mourinho wants Edson as midfield leader
The Portuguese coach, renowned for his preference for tactically disciplined players, has placed Álvarez at the top of his wishlist. The 27-year-old featured in 31 official matches for the Hammers last season, proving to be a reliable presence, although his statistical output was limited to just one assist.

While still focused on his current role in England, the midfielder is also weighing proposals from other European clubs. Alongside Fenerbahçe, Ajax and at least two other teams have shown interest in signing him. For now, Álvarez is assessing his options and has yet to make a final decision.
Fenerbahçe focused on Champions League challenge
As negotiations progress, the Turkish giants are preparing for one of their most important tests of the season: the Champions League play-off round. On August 20, Mourinho’s men will face Benfica in a decisive tie that could shape their campaign.
At their Can Bartu training facilities, the squad recently carried out strength sessions in the gym, before moving on to coordination and speed drills on the pitch. The practice also included passing work, tactical drills, and individual instructions, all with the official European match ball—highlighting the serious approach to the upcoming clash.
With an ambitious project and a squad undergoing renewal, Fenerbahçe are aiming to make a statement in the market with the signing of Edson Álvarez—a move that would not only raise the team’s quality but also boost the fans’ belief in José Mourinho’s project.
