A version under scrutiny

The tragic accident that claimed the lives of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva on the A-52 continues to raise questions. While Spain’s Guardia Civil reported that speeding was likely the cause, two Portuguese truck drivers who witnessed the crash have come forward to challenge that conclusion. Their testimonies, first shared by Noti Funchal and later picked up by Spanish outlets like Marca and AS, could shift the narrative.

The crash occurred when the green Lamborghini Huracán carrying the two brothers veered off the road near Cernadilla (Zamora) and burst into flames. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses speak out

One of the drivers, José Aleixo Duarte, said the Lamborghini passed him just five minutes before the crash. According to Duarte, the car was moving at a moderate speed and showed no signs of reckless driving. “They weren’t speeding. The road was in terrible condition,” he told Portuguese outlet CM.

Another truck driver, José Azevedo, claimed to have filmed the aftermath — the same viral video initially published by Noti Funchal. In the clip, Azevedo said he stopped to help but was unable to do anything. “My conscience is clear. I give my word to the family: they weren’t speeding,” he said. Azevedo even showed his tachograph and name in the video, confirming his identity.

An ongoing investigation

Both drivers stressed that the A-52 is a dangerous, dark, and poorly maintained road. Azevedo, who drives it daily, was clear: “I’ve seen reckless driving before, but they were completely calm.” For now, the official report remains unchanged, but these new testimonies could reignite the debate around what really happened that night.
