The Gesture That Calmed Liverpool’s Fury: Luis Díaz Breaks Down in Tears at Diogo Jota’s Memorial
He was criticized at first for not being there. But Luis Díaz showed up, and couldn’t hold back the tears. The Colombian joined the tribute to Diogo Jota… with his heart on his sleeve.
After missing the funeral, the Colombian was heavily criticized. But he finally traveled to Gondomar to say goodbye to his teammate. His emotion said it all.
A gesture worth more than a thousand words
Luis Díaz was one of the most notable absentees at the funeral for Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, which sparked a wave of criticism. On social media, some Liverpool fans even demanded he be sold, calling his absence an unforgivable sign of disrespect. But this Wednesday, the Colombian traveled to Gondomar—the brothers’ hometown—and attended the seventh-day memorial mass. He was visibly emotional, silent, and marked by grief.
The ceremony took place at the Parish Church of Gondomar, bringing together family, friends, and key figures in Portuguese football. Alisson Becker, another notable absentee from the funeral, was also present after overcoming travel issues.
A heartfelt and moving farewell
The service included figures like Diogo Costa, José Sá, Rúben Neves, João Mário, Pedro Proença (president of the Portuguese Football Federation), and Ricardo Carvalho, assistant coach of the national team. Businessmen, coaches, and the entire Peñafiel squad—André Silva’s team—also attended.
Nearly 100 people gathered outside the church. There were hugs, tears, candles… and a deep, respectful silence. Among them, Luis Díaz stood quietly, visibly moved.
A wound that will take time to heal
Sources close to the Colombian explained that his initial absence was due to personal and professional commitments that made travel impossible at the time. But his presence at the memorial mass was a genuine and intimate way to pay tribute. The football world continues to mourn the loss of the Jota brothers.
