The first Le Classique of the season arrives early in the title race, but with genuine pressure already building around both French giants. Olympique de Marseille will host Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, September 20 at 2:45 ET at the Orange Vélodrome on Matchday 5 of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season. The table is still in its early stages, but results in August and September have already left both clubs with little room for another setback.
Marseille vs PSG: Who Has More to Lose in Le Classique?
Olympique de Marseille hosts champion Paris Saint-Germain after losing three straight Ligue 1 games. The Parisians have also started below their usual standards, but enter the trip to the Vélodrome under less immediate pressure.
Bruno Génésio’s team opened the league season with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Strasbourg, but has since lost three straight matches: 2-0 against Monaco, 3-2 against Paris FC and 1-0 away to Rennes. That leaves OM with only three points from its first four league games.
The schedule makes the situation more difficult. Marseille opens its UEFA Europa League league-phase campaign away to Beşiktaş in Istanbul on Thursday, September 17. Three days later, it must face its biggest domestic rival at home. For a team already trying to end a three-game losing streak, that turnaround adds another layer to the challenge.
There is also a recent scar from this rivalry. The last meeting between the clubs ended in a 5-0 PSG victory at the Parc des Princes in February, one of the largest winning margin in Le Classique history. Marseille, however, won the previous meeting at the Vélodrome 1-0 during the 2025-26 season.
PSG cannot afford another domestic setback either
The defending champion is in a better position, but its league start has also been below its usual standard. PSG drew 2-2 with Rennes and Lille, lost 2-1 at home to Monaco, and only secured its first league victory on Matchday 4, beating Brest 1-0 through an early Ferran Torres goal. That gives Luis Enrique’s side five points from 12.
Unlike Marseille, PSG has a clear preparation advantage. After opening its UEFA Champions League campaign with a 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava and then facing Brest on September 13, the Parisian side has no competitive game before traveling south.
So, who has more to lose?
By its own standards, every domestic defeat matters for PSG. It is the reigning champion, and dropping seven points from the opening four matches has already created an unusual start.
The more immediate pressure, however, sits with Marseille. OM is at home, has lost three straight league games, owns only three points and will return from a European trip to Istanbul just days before kickoff. A defeat would not decide a season in September, but it would deepen an already poor opening. For Marseille, this Le Classique looks less like a bonus opportunity and more like a game that demands a response.
