Lyon Cools Hopes of Seeing Karim Benzema Return
The French club’s sporting director addressed the rumors surrounding the striker and explained why the anticipated reunion was never close to happening.
The possibility of Karim Benzema returning to Olympique Lyonnais generated plenty of excitement during the transfer window, but the club insists the move was never genuinely close to happening.
Matthieu Louis-Jean, Lyon’s sporting director, addressed the speculation that spread primarily across social media and made clear that the club never viewed the situation as an advanced negotiation.
The executive went even further: there was understandable excitement around the possibility of seeing the striker return to the club where his career began, but the conditions required to turn that dream into a real deal were simply never in place.
“It Was More Noise Than Reality”
Speaking to France TV, Louis-Jean explained that one of the main obstacles involved Benzema’s contractual situation and his departure from Saudi Arabia.
“Benzema, was it close? No, it was not close to happening,” Louis-Jean said. “Of course, like you, I heard what was said on social networks. I know there was an issue getting out of his contract in Saudi Arabia, but no, it was more noise than reality. I don’t think it was feasible in any case.”
His comments effectively shut down the idea that Lyon were ever on the verge of bringing back one of the greatest players produced by their academy. Supporters may have dreamed about the reunion, but it never developed into a concrete opportunity for the club.
The Emotional Homecoming That Never Took Shape
Benzema began his professional career at Lyon before joining Real Madrid in 2009, making the idea of completing the circle with a return home especially appealing.
But sentiment was never enough. The contractual complications surrounding his Saudi Arabia exit, combined with the demands of putting together a deal of that magnitude, prevented the possibility from gaining any real momentum.
In the end, it became an attractive transfer story rather than a move Lyon were actually close to completing.
Lyon Are Already Looking Toward January
With the Benzema possibility effectively put to rest, Lyon are already working on other ways to strengthen their attack during the winter transfer window and continue building their project in Ligue 1.
One name on their radar is Elmin Rastoder, the Panathinaikos forward who was reportedly monitored during the summer and could once again become a target when the January window opens.
Lyon appear ready to look forward rather than back. A Benzema return would have carried enormous emotional weight, but the club has now made clear that it was never particularly close to becoming reality.

- Lyon denied that a deal to bring Karim Benzema back was ever close.
