Karim Benzema Eyes a Return That Could Shake Up Ligue 1

  • El francés pensó seriamente en volver al club donde comenzó su carrera y su exagente reveló por qué el esperado regreso no pudo concretarse este verano.

Karim Benzema came much closer to imagining a return to France than many might have thought. After his time with Al-Hilal came to an end this summer, the 38-year-old striker seriously considered going back to Lyon, the club where his career began and where he first emerged as a global star.

Lyon themselves explored the possibility of bringing their former academy graduate home, something general director Matthieu Louis-Jean publicly acknowledged. In the end, however, the move proved impossible because of contractual commitments Benzema still has in Saudi Arabia.

The deal never happened, but the idea was real and Benzema’s bond with Lyon remains as strong as ever. Now without a club according to the available information, the possibility of seeing him back in Ligue 1 inevitably remains one of the possible final chapters of his career, even if there are currently no confirmed negotiations.

Benzema Spent a Long Time Thinking About a Lyon Return

Karim Djaziri, the striker’s former agent, confirmed that the possibility was far more than a romantic idea among supporters. Benzema genuinely considered going home.

“Returning to Lyon, he thought about it for a long time. It’s his city, his team, his club,” Djaziri told RMC.

The words underline just how much Lyon still means to Benzema. It is where he grew up, developed as a player and launched the career that would eventually make him one of the defining strikers of his generation.

The Obstacle That Stopped His Return to France

The issue was never sporting or sentimental. According to Djaziri, Benzema’s contractual situation made a summer move impossible.

“It was impossible for him to return this summer because he has a contract that binds him with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” his former agent explained.

That commitment ultimately shut down a possibility both Benzema and Lyon had considered. The French club explored the scenario, the striker seriously thought about returning, but the conditions needed to complete the move simply were not there.

Lyon Was the Beginning of an Extraordinary Career

Before becoming a superstar at Real Madrid, Benzema came through every level of Lyon’s academy and established himself in the first team before moving to Spain in 2009.

He spent 14 seasons in Madrid, building a trophy-filled career and cementing his place among the club’s greatest players before leaving for Saudi Arabia in 2023.

Djaziri pointed to just how unusual Benzema’s career path has been. “Unlike many players, Karim has only known two clubs. It’s very rare today to have a linear career like that,” he said, referring to his long spells with Lyon and Real Madrid before his move to Saudi Arabia.

Ligue 1 Could Still Be the Setting for His Final Homecoming

For now, a return to Lyon belongs to the list of opportunities that never quite came together. There are no confirmed new talks and no indication that a deal is about to be revived.

But one detail matters: Benzema wanted to return. Lyon also explored the move, and his former agent has now confirmed that the striker spent a long time considering it.

At 38, every decision about Benzema’s future starts to feel like it could shape the final chapter of his career. And if he ultimately chooses to finish where everything began, Ligue 1 could welcome back one of the greatest players French football has produced.

Why a Benzema Return to Lyon Still Matters

  • Karim Benzema spent a long time considering a return to Lyon, according to his former agent.
  • The French club explored bringing him back this summer, but his commitments in Saudi Arabia prevented the move.
  • There is no new deal in place, but his bond with Lyon keeps the possibility of a future Ligue 1 return alive.
