Can Ferran Torres Finish as Ligue 1’s Top Scorer?

  • PSG’s new No. 9 needed very little time to reach the top of the scoring charts. His hot start is already beginning to look like something more.

Five matchdays were enough for Ferran Torres to change the conversation around his arrival at Paris Saint-Germain. The Spaniard has scored four Ligue 1 goals and officially sits atop the scoring chart, although four other players have reached the same total.

His impact began with a brace against Rennes on his debut, continued with the winner against Brest and carried into Le Classique against Marseille. In total, Ferran needed just 252 league minutes to score four times, an average of one goal every 63 minutes.

It is far too early to hand out a scoring crown in October, but it is no longer too early to ask the question. Ferran arrived in Paris expected to compete for minutes in one of Europe’s deepest attacks. A few weeks later, he is producing like a forward capable of staying in the Golden Boot conversation all season.

His Numbers Already Look Like a Contender’s

The four goals are impressive, but how little Ferran has needed to score them stands out even more. He has taken nine shots in Ligue 1, put five on target and converted four. He has also scored three of his four big chances, with half of his goals coming from headers.

There is another important detail: none of his four goals have come from the penalty spot. That has helped him remain ahead of several rivals once the league’s official tiebreaking criteria are applied.

And this start has not come out of nowhere. Before moving to Paris, Torres ended the 2025-26 season with 21 goals in all competitions for Barcelona, including 16 in LaLiga, his best league return to that point.

The Race Is Much Tighter Than It Looks

Ferran is hardly alone. After five matchdays, Kamory Doumbia, Amine Gouiri, Lamine Sinayoko and Paris Brunner had also reached four goals. The Spaniard sits first after the tiebreakers, having needed fewer minutes than Brunner to reach the same total.

That makes the race much harder to predict. Brunner has already started delivering for Monaco, Gouiri is carrying a significant share of Marseille’s attacking burden, and there is almost an entire season left for other contenders to emerge.

The recent benchmark is not particularly low either. Ousmane Dembélé won the scoring title with 21 goals in 2024-25, while Estéban Lepaul matched that total last season. Ferran has started at the pace required to enter that territory. Maintaining it over a full Ligue 1 campaign will be the difficult part.

Ferran’s Biggest Problem Could Be PSG Itself

Ironically, playing for France’s most powerful attacking team could also become his biggest obstacle. Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué are among the options available to Luis Enrique, and Ferran has already shown that the coach does not need to start him to get production.

Three of his first four Ligue 1 goals came after entering from the bench. That efficiency has been remarkable, but it also creates the biggest question between now and May: will he play enough minutes to compete with strikers who start every weekend?

The next stretch should begin to provide an answer. PSG hosts Le Mans on October 10 before a schedule combining Ligue 1 and Champions League commitments once again forces Luis Enrique to manage minutes across a loaded attack.

Paris Knows How to Produce a Top Scorer

If there is one club from which to attack this race, it is PSG. Before Lepaul ended the streak last season, a Paris player had finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer for 10 consecutive seasons, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappé and Dembélé all contributing to that run.

Ferran also arrived in Paris wearing the No. 9 shirt and with a contract through 2031. His profile differs from several of the stars around him: he can operate from wide areas, but his opening weeks in France have shown a player increasingly comfortable attacking the box and living close to goal.

So, can he finish as Ligue 1’s top scorer? Yes. His candidacy is already real. The bigger question is whether Luis Enrique eventually turns one of his most effective impact players into a forward with regular starting minutes. If that happens, Ferran Torres could remain in the race for France’s scoring crown all the way to the finish.

The Keys to Ferran Torres’ Scoring Bid

  • He has scored four goals in just 252 Ligue 1 minutes.
  • He shares the league-high total but sits first in the official scoring table after tiebreakers.
  • The biggest question may not be whether he can score, but whether he will get enough minutes in PSG’s crowded attack.
