Rennes Punishes Wasteful Marseille as Ligue 1 Struggles Deepen
Marseille once again came away empty-handed. OM had possession, created the first chances, and for long stretches looked like the team most likely to score, but once again paid a heavy price for its lack of finishing.
The result extends the Breton side’s excellent start to the season while deepening the crisis at Marseille, which has now suffered three consecutive defeats in the league.
Samba Keeps Rennes Alive Against Marseille’s Pressure
Marseille’s desperation for a result was evident from the opening minutes.
Igor Paixão had the first opportunity in the 10th minute, but Brice Samba comfortably handled his effort. The Rennes goalkeeper was called into action again in the 31st minute to stop a long-range strike from Timothy Weah.
OM kept pushing.
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg wasted another good opportunity following a counterattack, while Rennes remained compact and waited for spaces to respond.
The home side’s first clear opportunity arrived just before halftime. Ludovic Blas tried to surprise the goalkeeper with a low free kick, but Jeffrey de Lange reacted well to keep the match scoreless.
The same pattern continued after the break.
In the 50th minute, Amine Harit forced another intervention from Samba. The rebound fell to Angel Gomes, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
Then came one of soccer’s unwritten rules.
If you don’t take your chances, you pay for them.
Adrien Thomasson Completely Changes the Match
Just two minutes later, Mousa Al-Tamari found space to deliver a cross and Adrien Thomasson arrived to finish the move and make it 1-0.
It was a brutal blow for a Marseille side that had created more opportunities but simply could not find a way past Samba.
The goal completely changed the match.
Ludovic Blas came close to doubling the lead with a header before Thomasson threatened again following another excellent pass from Al-Tamari, although De Lange managed to make the save.
The partnership between the two came within inches of putting the game away in the 71st minute. Al-Tamari once again broke down the flank before cutting the ball back to Thomasson, whose powerful strike crashed against the post.
One minute later, OM responded.
Paixão connected with a header, the ball took a slight deflection and struck the crossbar. Marseille was still alive, but once again the ball simply refused to go in.
In the closing minutes, Rennes slowed the tempo, took greater control of possession, and managed its advantage. Derek Cornelius still had one final opportunity in the 90+4th minute with a header from a corner, but Samba was there once again to collect the ball.
There was no miracle for Marseille.
Rennes survived when it needed to, struck when the opportunity arrived, and protected its advantage until the final whistle.
For OM, however, the situation is becoming increasingly concerning: three consecutive defeats in Ligue 1 and far too many wasted opportunities for a team that desperately needs to respond.
